Merano High Mountain Trail
The Merano High Mountain Trail, one of the most beautiful hiking loops in South Tyrol, runs for 100 kilometres along the Texelgruppe Nature Park, around the Texel Mountains. The Alta Via di Merano Trail opened in 1985. It consists mainly of historical footpaths that local farmers had been using from time immemorial. Pioneers from the South Tyrol Alpine Association joined these steep, ancient paths in order to create the modern trail. Numerous Alpine lodges and taverns along the way provide a welcome opportunity for hikers to take a break. Whether you plan to hike the entire loop or just do a leg, the trail offers good options for hikers of all skill levels: the coexistence of leisurely sections of trail without much of a grade together with steep Alpine sections leaves a lot of room for a custom-tailored excursion.
