When Tyrol was threatened by the French troops under Napoleon in 1796, the provincial estates of Tyrol met in Bolzano to discuss the precarious situation. An abbot appealed to entrust South Tyrol to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and thereby to ask for divine assistance. From then on, the vow was renewed annually with the lighting of the Heart of Jesus fire on the mountains and slopes. On this special day in June there are always numerous traditional festivals and concerts with music bands.
